Junky by William Burroughs: His first novel, the least experimental of his books with the best prose. A genuine stylistic masterpiece (although Exterminator! is also good). Centered around the time Burroughs first became a heroin addict in1940's NYC, a group of jukies hustle to get “fixed” no matter what the cost, including stealing prescription pads, prostitution, and pick-pocketing people on the subway.
First Sentence:
“My first experience with junk was during the war, about 1944 or 1945.”
