MAY DAY

May Day by F. Scott Fitzgerald: Of course, The Great Gatsby is my first choice when it comes to Fitzgerald, but May Day is second—a 50 page short story which follows several characters during one night in NYC, on May Day. A desperate socialite scrambles to borrow money from his friends, two sailors paint the town red, a riot at a Communist newspaper office, a swanky hotel ballroom party, and booze all around.

First Sentence:
“There had been a war faught and won and the great city of the conquering people was crossed with triumphal arches and vivid with thrown flowers of white, red, and rose.”
