The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe: Different from Goethe's Faust, this “doctor” sells his soul to the devil, but wastes all his powers doing magic tricks for kings and princes, conjuring up lustful mirages of Helen of Troy to stare at, and playing nasty tricks on the Pope and other hypocritical priests. Then he gets dragged to Hell, to suffer for the rest of eternity.
(EXCERPT)
“Yet for Christ's sake, whose blood hath ransomed me / Impose some end to my incessant pain! / Let Faustus live in hell a thousand years / A hundred thousand and at last be saved! / No end is limited to damned souls!”
