FRANNY AND ZOOEY

Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger: Franny Glass, a college student, becomes obsessed with a monk who travelled the countryside repeating the same simple prayer over and over until “devotion to the world pulsed inside him as regularly as his heartbeat.” She falls into a depression because it seems no one she knows has any geniune enthusiasm or love for anything other than themselves. Her brother Zooey visits to talk.

First Sentence:
“Though brilliantly sunny, Saturday morning was overcoat weather again, not just topcoat weather, as it had been all week and as everyone had hoped it would stay for the big weekend—the weekend of the Yale game.”
