WISE BLOOD

Wise Blood by Flannery O'Connor: Hazel Motes returns from the Army, bitterly trying to shake off the feeling that God has called him to be a preacher. As a form of rebellion, he starts preaching on street corners about the Church Without Christ, "where the blind don't see and the lame don't walk and what's dead stays that way," yet he still feels “Jesus haunting him from every way.”

“I don't believe in Sin,” he said. “You do,” the blind man said. “You're marked.” “I ain't marked,” Haze said, “I'm free.” “You're marked free,” the blind man said. “Jesus loves you and you can't escape his mark...”
