I HONESTLY hate, with a passion, this dynamic that social networking has put in place. Hate. It.
So yh, I have always appreciated facebook because it gives you the opportunity to keep in touch with people you care about and to stay up to date with whats going on in their lives. However, in the past few years, facebook has evolved into something more than just keeping up with people. It has now become a tool used to avoid reality. and if you're lost, or for some reason you disagree, let me land, and then you can bury me.
I get millions of requests on facebook. Everyday. And for those of you sitting there going like "ugh, such a liar. No one gets a million requests on facebook", there's something called hyperbole. If you don't know what that is, spend some more intimate time with your dictionary. As i was saying, i get soo many requests that it becomes kinda annoying. out of these requests i get, there are several kinds of reactions i have.
1. Ooooooooohhhhhhhhh!! I know this person! It's been a while since we communicated. CONFIRM.
2. Hold on a second. I am not friends with this person? Whhhhyyyyy??? CONFIRM.
3. Ummm, I'm not sure I know this person, but HE'S kinda cute. CONFIRM. and let me stress this point. This ONLY goes for guys. This does not go for girls.
4. I don't know you. We don't have enough friends in common. IGNORE.
5. I have no idea who you are. You don't even have a picture?? bleehhhh... IGNORE.
6. I've been waiting for a request from you!! I've been secretly hoping you would send one. CCCOOONNNFFFIIIIRRRRMMMMMM!!!
7. LMAO! So we talked for 2 seconds and you think facebook cuts the chase? IGNORE.
8. What's all with the cheesy short message?.. IGNORE
My reactions include but are not limited to the above. Sometimes, life has a little more colour in it, so you look through his pictures and accept him if he's a good looking guy. Sometimes life is just black and white and you ignore the requests if you don't know them.
When i accept random people's requests, i don't expect that they'll be talking to me every 5 seconds, or writing on my wall, or stuff like that; after all, they're random right? However, I appreciate a little holler in a while. Hey, thanx for the birthday message, or maybe just a watsup? hows life going? Yes, I get those once in a while from a random person i accepted. But here's what really bothers me.
People send me messages and write on my wall like they've known me for years and I respond nicely. Why then, do you see me the next day in class, or on the sidewalk and have that look on your face that says "UMMM, DO I KNOW YOU?" Actually, yes you do biotchhhh... It was my wall you were scribbling over last night, and my inbox you were pumping with messages.
Facebook has nicely taken the place of reality with some people. On facebook you know me, but off facebook you don't. Like really, WTH?? I'm not intimidating. Or maybe i look like it, idk. It never hurt to really just say to me what you wrote on my facebook wall. No one has an obligation to say hi to me, but if you do just that on facebook, i dont see what stops you from doing it in person. I'm not one to really hide my feelings, so if I say hi to you nicely it definitely means I think you deserve it. If I didn't like you, trust me, you wouldn't need an angel to tell you...or maybe you would, cause I do good with pretence too. *wink* And just so you know, that's nothing to be proud about.
Anyway, I'll let just one secret out of the bag. If I always say hi to you FIRST, even when we're not that cool, it's just because there's something about you that I like. or maybe it's just you that I like. and yes, this one goes for both boys and girls. Plus, I don't know how good I'll be at playing the Facebook vs. reality game cause I think that's just dum... and fyi, that wasn't sarcastic.
So, for all those of you that feel familiar with me on facebook and then see me the next day and give me the ummm-do-i-know-you look, I'll be waiting for you to just ask the question. and I'll be more than glad to remind you - with a lot more than just my words... :-)
that's all about "ummm do i know you'?.. as i do it.
Shanpepe... xoxo
