At the last second I decided to include a few of Drake's new heartbreak songs along with the “sex and death” quotes because in my weird little brain they seem to fit together
(1/3) “Death appeared in the world together with sexual reproduction. Cellular mitosis knows nothing of death; the organism replicates itself exactly. Sexual reproduction seems, by comparison, a cruel sport of Nature, since replication of the self now requires sexual attraction for the Other, and therefore loss of the self in the Other.
Doing It Wrong
(2/3) When simple cellular replication is sexualized, the life instinct is translated into desire. Since desire is, as Lacan insists, the desire for the Other, it is by necessity the desire for death. Sexual organisms achieve immortality only through death to the Self. This myth that finds in sexual desire the origin of evil is to be found wherever we look in ancient cosmologies.
Marvin's Room
(3/3) The archaic mind shows a deep understanding when it reads in sexual reproduction both the birth of consciousness and the origin of death. The one element Hesiod ignores in this equation is that, in a sexualized world, both male and female suffer the same fate.” --Norman Austin from Meaning and Being in Myth
Club Paradise
(not a quote but) “la petite mort” or “the little death”—a popular French saying, describing the experience of having a sexual orgasm
